Research & Development (R&D) is an undertaking enquiring and investigating tool, in a systematic, methodical and ethical way; helping to solve practical problems and increase knowledge in business. Life is dynamic on the same amplitude to zeitgeist; leadership who are rigid to their old mind loose competition in business to insolvency, because customer’s desires do not fit their stiff vision, tracing zeitgeist is usually traced and uncovered through R&D.
R&D is the driving force of any sound competitive organization, because it monitors customer’s trend which empowers leadership to change accordingly, thus gaining competitive advantage (CA). A company without CA, it connotes the situation defined in Strategy Link as Vicious-Cycle enthusiast, she will keep on operating there until realigning towards the current paradigm (zeitgeist) – and the realignment direction is a pure R&D task. There are different functions of R&D; some of them are Creativity is an ability to create something new and improved entity. It is a thinking product driving R&D cognition process. Discovery part-one is the “Basic” (or “fundamental”) research consists of original experimental and/or theoretical investigations conducted to advance human knowledge in scientific and engineering fields (ref.). Discovery part-two is the Directed Basic Research Directed basic” (or “exploratory”) research is original scientific or technical work that advance knowledge in relevant (to corporate business strategies) scientific and engineering fields, or that creates useful concepts that can be subsequently developed into commercial materials, processes, or products and, thus, make a contribution to the company’s profitability at some time in the foreseeable future. It may not respond directly to a specific problem or need, but it is selected and directed in those fields where advances will have a major impact on the company’s future core businesses (ref.). For example, directed research discovered steam engine, internal combustion engine etc. It utilizes basic research to give a secondary, but not final solution to social problems, like the internal combustion engine, it converts a product of basic research fuel, into mechanical energy, which is utilized to make boats, cars etc. in invention (applied research).
Invention or an “Applied” research is an investigation directed toward obtaining specific knowledge related to existing or planned commercial products, processes, systems, or services. For example a car invention, combined several directed researches to breakthrough a transport solution.
Innovation or the “Development Research” is the translation of research findings or other knowledge into a plan or design for new, modified, or improved products/processes/services whether intended for sale or use. It includes the conceptual formulation, design, and testing of product/process/service alternatives, the construction of prototypes, and the operation of initial, scaled-down systems or pilot plants”. Innovation is the commercialization of invented entities to harness a particular social need, like V6 or V8 engine are mere manipulations of the same invented principles i.e. an engine, wheels, transmission etc. using same principles, but different power, comfort, size etc.
